 In the 17th century, Dutch settlers lost no time on arrival before planting their first vines in South Africa. The climate is very similar to that of Southern Europe, and provides the ideal conditions for its main grape variety, the Pinotage, to flourish. The majority of South Africa's vineyards are still given over to producing white wines. The most famous of these is Constantia, a sweet white wine made from the Muscat grape that has earned South Africa its place on the world wine map since the 19th century.
