In the heart of the Chartreuse massif, the Grand Chartreuse monastery is the birthplace of an ancestral tradition often imitated but never equalled: the making of the famous Chartreuse liqueur. It is made from 130 plants to a detailed recipe, the secret of which has been closely guarded by the monks since the Middle Ages. Only two monks at any one time are in possession of the recipe, and each will hand it on to just one fellow brother of the order. A digestif after-dinner drink in the purest mountain tradition, the distinctive character of certain bottles makes it an extremely coveted product today.
